Bats Come Alive

We’ve been waiting for the bats to warm up along with the weather, fortunately for the Pirates, both occurred Sunday.  Chris Terrazas got the ball rolling with a 2-run HR in the first plating Billy Brookshaw.  Jim French’s HR put the Pirates up 3-0 and Alex Ross’s 2-run single slid the lead to 5-0 after 3.  Then the Jared Powell show started.  In his last three AB’s he hit two HRs and a sac fly driving in 7.  The game ended after seven innings due to the mercy rule with a final score of 15-2.

Adam Barta started the game, pitched six innings striking out 5 while allowing two earned runs.  Mark Erickson threw the final scoreless frame.

The Pirates have now won four in a row improving their record to 4-3 and 2-1 in SCVBL play.  They are at Blaine on Wednesday 7:30.

The Pirates jumped out to a 5-0 lead on Menomonie and hang on to win 5-4. Chris Terrazas drove in the first run with a sac fly to plate Alex Ross in the 1st. Brady Randolph doubled home Jim French and Jake Kuschke drove in Randolph to give the Pirates a 3-0 after two. Chris Terrazas and Jared Powell had back to back singles to bump the lead to 5-0 after five.

Jesse Tollefson threw for the Pirates and was very good. He threw 7.2 giving up two runs in the 8th and was relieved by Eric Monson. Monson retired the first batter in the 8th and got out of trouble in the 9th to record his first save.

The boys are in Elm wood today at 1.

Plum City Tournament Reivew

The Pirates went 2-1 in the Plum City Tournament.  Unfortunately the loss was the first game against Ellworth 2-1.  The game was 1-1 through six when the Hubbers plated a run in the 7th to take the lead and the Pirate’s weren’t able to tie the game up in the bottom.  The bats still were silent but there were better swings and some unlucky happenings that kept the offense in check.

Next up were the Plum City Blues.  Adam Barta started the game and threw all seven innings.  He did run into one barrel in the 6th which I’ve heard still hasn’t landed.  The final score was 6-4 and with Barta getting the W and battery mate Ben Krings going  3-4.  Mike Lytle had a 2 run double in the 2nd to kick start the offense.

Monday we played Bay City in the consolation game.  The Pirates jumped on top right away scoring consistently all game.  Nick Johnson had a couple hits and 3 RBI, Jared Powell hit his first home run and Alex Ross had 2 run double. Brian Johnson also had three hits.  Pirates won 10-3 and Billy Brookshaw picked up with pitching win.  Unfornately Lytle hurt his shoulder pitching and will be placed on the 7 day DL.  Being called up is Michael Brookshaw. j/k

Plum City Tournament

The Pirates play in the annual Plum City Tournament starting Saturday at 10 AM versus Ellsworth.  This tournament is like no other as pretty much anything goes outside of the baselines and the atmosphere and discretionary choices are talked about for decades.

Unfortunately the Pirates head into the tournament by losing their first two games.  New Richmond handed the squad their first conference loss on the season, 5-1 on Sunday.  Hayden Zimmerman shutdown the offense by only giving up one unearned run and tossing all nine innings.

The Pirates look to get in a groove this weekend with some needed innings for some of the veteran players.  Should be a fun weekend.

Sport-N-Spine Game Review

The season opener went about as well as a season opener normally goes.  Some good plays, some not so good plays, a few really good swings, three base running gaffs and a couple boots.  All in all, the team played pretty well considering it was the first time most of us had stepped on a field since August.

With the Pirates up 2-1 in the 4th, Sport-N-Spine put up a seven spot on starter Mark Erickson and relief pitcher Brett Steinwagner.  Four of the seven came with two outs.  Nothing to be upset about the pitching though, guys threw strikes but they found some barrels.

Up next is Ellsworth on Saturday at Firehall Field @ Noon.

Season Opener is Here!

Tonight the Pirates begin their 2013 journey against Sport-N-Spine, a Minnesota Class A team from St. Paul.  On the hill will be newcomer Mark Erickson from Superior, WI by way of St. Scholastica College.  The game will be played at legendary Dunning Field in St. Paul just off of HWY 94 and Lexington Ave starting at 7:30.

There are a hanful of new players on the roster this year that is topping out at 21 players, the largest ever in Pirate history.  Jake Hintz, Erickson, Eric Monson and eventually Rob Mouton will round out the roster to give the Pirates their deepest team ever assembled.

Saturday is the first conference game against rival Ellsworth.  Ellsworth was a hit away from joining Prescott in the WBA state championship game last year and will give the Pirates an early test.  Game is set for Noon in Prescott.  Sunday should be no easier as New Richmond comes to town for a 1 PM tilt.  The Pirates have struggled with the Millers as of late and with New Richmond’s pitching, it should be another battle.

Unfortunately the Pirates lost a few members of the squad.  Chuck Block has decided to retire and Dillow Powell now lives in Missouri.  Good luck to both and we will miss you in the dugout.
